| Thus far, the Leonidion area has been able to maintain its charm and avoid the perils of mass tourism by vigorously maintaining local customs and culture. Easter, or “Pasha,” is a characteristic example, featuring the release of countless “aerostata” (lighted hot air balloons) in the night sky at midnight on Holy Saturday, illuminating the dark sky as a flotilla of night-lights. One observer, Dimitri Psathas, has suggested spending “...Mardi Gras in Patras and Easter in Leonidion.”

Many of Leonidion’s older residents can still converse in “tsakoniki,” a dialect that has survived from the ancient Doric. Their greeting to visitors – “Kaour Ecanate!” – means WELCOME.
